The Game UN:Me: An Cerebral Thriller That Blends Silent Hill and Social Deduction Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed several fascinating future games, but one in particular has captured attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure seems to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive game where a young woman containing multiple personalities within her must escape from a maze of the psyche," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Mind
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her reside four distinct souls, each with unique fears and drives. These souls can take over at will, unleashing their innermost phobias upon her suddenly.
Judging by showcased gameplay, much of the narrative unfolds within a creepy medical facility, though additional clips depict the main character navigating a desolate church.
An Environment of Personal Horror
"What makes you afraid of? What causes you uncomfortable?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. People in power. Things that appear minor to others can trigger something primal within us. This game explores that concept — anxieties that are specific to every individual."
The central gameplay loop involves controlling the persona that surfaces at a particular time. However, these souls will change involuntarily during gameplay. While exploring, each soul's anxieties become exaggerated and attack the protagonist in succession. As the persona shifts, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
Eerie Visuals and a Deadly Decision
At first glance, UN:Me shares noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is populated by orderlies who all share the identical visage, with unnervingly wide smiles. Patients in the waiting room have enormous blooms growing from their necks are. Floral motifs are an ever-present theme, juxtaposing organic elegance with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique mechanic. Players must determine which of the four entities inhabiting the heroine is the "real" one. "All four personas claims that the physical form is rightfully them," notes a creator. "During the game, you need to figure out who is real."
Once players believes a soul is an impostor, they must eliminate it. However, because every entity can deceive or obfuscate the reality, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.
"Perhaps you've already destroyed the true [soul] with your own hands," the narration suggests. "The final entity remaining might be a fraud. Either way, your choices are final."
UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced launch window, but it is can be wishlist on platforms.
