The Chainsaw Man Film Dominates the U.S. Cinema Earnings in Debut Weekend
Can Sony claim to have done it again? Coming after the success of the hit anime Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which earned more than $600 million at the box office, the new movie Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc has officially crossed the hundred-million-dollar mark internationally, hitting a global total of $108 million during its debut. The film surpassed Black Phone 2 (almost $13 million) in its second weekend in cinemas, as well as the music documentary Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere starring Jeremy Allen White (nine million dollars).
Impressive American and Global Earnings
Directed by director Tatsuya Yoshihara, the film is a direct continuation of the initial season of Chainsaw Man. It brought in over $18 million domestically after a strong $5.2 million Saturday and $4.5 million Sunday performance. Globally, the produced by MAPPA feature added $14.7 million across 46 international territories, bringing its global earnings to $60.4 million under Sony (over $43 million overseas, $18.2 million domestic). Official totals are still pending from Sony its final earnings figure.
Parallels to Previous Successful Anime Films
Promotional firm a leading anime marketing group had earlier commented, contrasting the movie's expected results to Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which grossed $34 million in the North America in the year 2022 and opened to a comparable $18 million domestically. The new film's first weekend matches that marker, while its hundred-and-eight-million-dollar international sum currently tracks slightly below Jujutsu Kaisen 0’s $166.6M final run. While it is improbable this Chainsaw Man film will match the numbers of smash success Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, it remains a huge win for the studio.
Fan Engagement Campaigns Fuel Performance
Along with its affiliate Crunchyroll have effectively leveraged audience interaction to boost their supremacy at the anime box office. The movie's marketing campaign kicked off at Anime Expo Los Angeles in summer with a MAPPA presentation, exclusive activations, and photo opportunities with Pochita, and later included a significant involvement at New York Comic Con including never-before-seen content, audience giveaways, and more MAPPA sessions. There was even an exclusive fan screening for moviegoers and content creators as well after the last day of the event.
Looking Ahead
This year marks a major time for Japanese animation, and for the company, which has an additional feature-length anime premiering in 2025 in the upcoming Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution in late this year.
