Anthony Barry Explains His Approach: For England, the Jersey Must Be a Cape, Not Protective Gear.
Ten years back, Barry competed in League Two. Today, he is focused to assist the head coach win the World Cup in 2026. His journey from athlete to trainer started as an unpaid coach with the youth team. He recalls, “Nights, a small field, tasked with 11 vs 11 … poor equipment, limited resources,” and he fell in love with it. He discovered his purpose.
Staggering Ascent
Barry's progression has been remarkable. Starting in a senior role at Wigan, he established a reputation with creative training and excellent people skills. His roles at clubs took him to top European clubs, while also serving in coaching jobs abroad for Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He's coached big names such as top footballers. Now, with England, it’s full-time, the top in his words.
“All begins with a vision … Yet I'm convinced that passion overcomes challenges. You have the dream and then you plan: ‘How do we do it, each day, each phase?’ We aim for World Cup victory. Yet dreams alone aren't enough. We have to build a structured plan enabling us to maximize our opportunities.”
Detail-Oriented Approach
Dedication, particularly on fine points, defines Barry’s story. Putting in long hours day and night, he and Tuchel push hard at comfort zones. Their methods feature psychological profiling, a heat-proof game model ahead of the tournament in North America, and fostering teamwork. Barry emphasizes “Team England” and rejects terms like “international break”.
“This isn't a vacation or a break,” Barry says. “It was vital to establish a setup that attracts the squad and they're pushed that going back is a relief.”
Ambitious Trainers
The assistant coach says and Tuchel as extremely driven. “We aim to control all parts of the match,” Barry affirms. “We want to conquer the whole ground and that's our focus most of our time to. It’s our job to not only anticipate with developments but to surpass them and innovate. It’s a constant process to have this problem/solution-finding mentality. And to clarify complicated matters.
“We have 50 days together with the team prior to the World Cup. We must implement a sophisticated style that offers a strategic upper hand and we must clarify it in that period. It's about moving it from thought to data to know-how to performance.
“To create a system that allows us to be productive during the limited time, we must utilize all the time available after our appointment. In the time we don’t have the players, it's vital to develop bonds among them. We must dedicate moments on the phone with them, observing them live, understand them, connect with them. If we limit ourselves to that time, we have no chance.”
Upcoming Matches
Barry is preparing for the final pair in the qualifying campaign – versus Serbia in London and Albania in Tirana. They've already ensured a spot in the tournament with six wins out of six with perfect defensive records. However, they won't relax; instead. This period to strengthen the squad's character, for further momentum.
“Thomas and I are both pretty clear that the style of play should represent everything that is good of English football,” he comments. “The athleticism, the versatility, the robustness, the integrity. The national team shirt should be harder than ever to get but comfortable to have on. It must resemble a cloak not protective gear.
“To ensure it's effortless, we have to give them a system that lets them to play freely similar to weekly matches, that connects with them and allows them to take the handbrake off. They should overthink less and focus more on action.
“There are emotional wins available to trainers at both ends of the pitch – playing out from the back, pressing from the front. However, in midfield on the field, that section, we believe play has stagnated, notably in domestic leagues. All teams are well-prepared currently. They can organize – structured defenses. We are really trying to focus on accelerating the game in that central area.”
Drive for Growth
His desire for improvement knows no bounds. When he studied for his pro license, he had concerns over the speaking requirement, as his cohort included stars such as Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick. To enhance his abilities, he went into the most challenging environments he could find to improve his talks. One was HMP Walton locally, and he trained detainees for a training session.
He earned his license in 2020 at the top of the class, and his dissertation – focusing on set-pieces, for which he analysed 16,154 throw-ins – was published. Lampard was among those convinced and he hired Barry as part of his backroom at Chelsea. When Lampard was sacked, it spoke volumes that Chelsea removed virtually all of his coaches while keeping Barry.
His replacement with the club was Tuchel, within months, he and Barry won the Champions League. When Tuchel was dismissed, the coach continued under Graham Potter. Once Tuchel resurfaced with Bayern, he got Barry out away from London and back alongside him. English football's governing body see them as a double act akin to Gareth Southgate and Steve Holland.
